New York recently witnessed a culinary competition like no other as some of the most talented Black female bakers from the region showcased their skills at the Sweet Celebrations Wedding Cake Competition.
The event, hosted by SIGNATURE BRIDE magazine and Designer Loft Bridal NYC, took place during New York Bridal Fashion Week at the luxurious Designer Loft Bridal NYC bridal salon.
The Sweet Celebrations Wedding Cake Competition was not just a tribute to cake artistry; it marked a historic moment as the first event of its kind in New York dedicated to highlighting the incredible talent of Black bakers.

Five local bakers participated, pushing the boundaries of flavor, design and technical expertise. Their creations were judged on three key aspects: aesthetic design, technical skill and taste. Guests were also treated to delectable samples of the cakes, paired with Whoopi Prosecco and sweets from Harlem Chocolate Candy Co.
Guests explored an exquisite array of bridal gowns from top designers including Rosa Clara, Pronovias, Yumi Katsura, J. Aton Bridal and others, all within the spacious 8,000-square-foot Designer Loft Bridal showroom. Models walked the floor, showcasing Designer Loft’s exclusive collection of luxury bridalwear, adding to the overall ambiance.

The competing bakers included A’s Exquisite Cakes, The Bakery on Bergen, Sugarbomb Sweet, Golden Sugar Bakery NYC and Aroma’s Boutique Bakery. Sabrina Wright of Golden Sugar Bakery NYC claimed first place in the competition, while A’s Exquisite Cakes earned second and Sugarbomb Sweet took third. However, all participants were celebrated for their incredible artistry.

“What an evening! We are so thrilled that Designer Loft Bridal NYC hosted this unique event with us. The cakes were amazing! It was the perfect setting to celebrate both bridal fashion and the artistry of wedding cake design. It’s where luxury, creativity and love intersected,” shared a spokesperson from SIGNATURE BRIDE.

“We were excited to partner with SIGNATURE BRIDE on this incredible competition featuring the nation’s top Black bakers! It was an honor to welcome our guests and to introduce them to the exceptional fashion talent at Designer Loft, including designers from South Africa, Mexico, Australia, Barcelona and beyond!” said Liz Sellassie, owner of Designer Loft Bridal NYC.
Sponsors for the event included Whoopi Prosecco, Dax Haircare, True Serenity Tea, Gale Miami Hotel + Residences, Jahzara Nicole Events, Barbara’s Flower Shop and ALUI Social. Day-of event coordination was led by Raymond Lewis of RLP Consulting, with photography captured by Kevin Dale Photography.
