From beach days to girls’ getaways, summer is the ultimate season to spend time outdoors doing what you love—the beach, the sun, the pool and dining alfresco.
But the hot weather can wreak havoc on our hair and skin. Check out our tips for staying fresh this summer.
Wear sunscreen daily
According to a 2020 Consumer Reports survey, 61% of the Black community and 23% of Hispanics say they never wear sunscreen. That’s not a good move. Everyone needs sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen protection every day with at least SPF 30 or higher; it should provide broad-spectrum protection (against those UVA and UVB rays) on any exposed skin. Be sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’ve spent time in the water. Wearing hats and sunglasses also offers protection while boosting your style.
Summertime hygiene
Summer means more time outdoors in the heat. Consider carrying a supply of cleansing cloths to cool off. Take shorter, cooler showers to avoid drying your skin. An evening shower can help your body and mind relax for better sleep.
Fragrance
Experiment with a new lighter scent that reflects your personality and style this summer—think citrusy and light floral scents. Spritz anytime and anywhere.
Freshen up hair and makeup
A new hairstyle and makeup routine can also help you stay cool and keep your style fresh. Summer is the time to try that new haircut or wear your hair up more often. Try out a fun head scarf or hair wrap for added sun protection. And add a pop of color to your lips with a tinted SPF lipstick.
