A newlywed home is more than just four walls—it’s the first canvas where two lives merge into one story. For Black couples, curating that space becomes a powerful opportunity to honor culture, celebrate identity and carry heritage forward.
From quilts passed down through generations to contemporary artwork that reflects Black excellence, the pieces you live with are more than décor; they’re storytellers, grounding you in history while inspiring your future.
Culture is the heartbeat of design. It shapes how we define beauty, comfort and belonging. For newlyweds, weaving cultural influences into your first home together is more than an aesthetic choice—it’s a declaration of identity and a foundation for your shared life.
When both partners’ backgrounds are honored through curated pieces, the home feels authentic and inclusive. It reflects not just one story, but the union of two. In doing so, couples create a space that celebrates heritage while laying the groundwork for new traditions to be passed down for new generations.
How to Bring Culture into Your Home

One of the most meaningful ways couples can layer culture into their home is through intentional curation of art, textiles and global influences. Artwork and photography, especially from Black artists or family archives, serve as daily reminders of resilience, excellence and love. Global finds—carved masks from Ghana, pottery from the Caribbean or woven baskets from local makers—bring stories that bridge the past with the present. Textiles—mud cloth, Kente and hand-stitched quilts—infuse warmth, pattern and heritage into any space. When thoughtfully layered, these elements transform ordinary spaces into soulful reflections of a couple’s journey.
Blending Heritage and Modern Design

Honoring culture in design doesn’t mean a home should feel like a museum. The beauty lies in the remix—blending heirlooms, traditional patterns and meaningful artifacts with sleek furniture, bold color palettes and contemporary accents. This balance allows couples to celebrate heritage while still creating a home that feels fresh, functional and uniquely their own. A vintage quilt might be paired with a modern leather sofa. Ancestral photography could be framed in minimalist black for a gallery-style wall. By layering soulful, story-driven pieces with modern design elements, you create spaces that are not only stylish, but deeply personal, a true reflection of where they come from and where they’re going together.
At Remix Living, I’ve had the honor of helping clients bring culture to life in powerful and personal ways. In Donya and Tom Short’s home, their entryway was designed as an immediate cultural experience, layered with a bold tribal-inspired wallpaper, a patterned runner, wood and ceramic wall décor and collected travel layers of accessories styled on their console table collected during their travels. In the dining room, I curated a photography wall showcasing images from global travels—turning memories into a living gallery.

Similarly, for NFL player Malcolm Jenkins’ family room, we elevated culture through art and heirlooms. His aunt’s original canvas was reframed to give it a contemporary edge, while two five-foot canes from a family trip to Ghana stand proudly as sculptural focal points.
These projects illustrate how culture, when thoughtfully curated, creates spaces that are not only beautiful but deeply rooted in personal identity and legacy.
Tips for Newlyweds: Curating with Intention

You don’t need a full design overhaul to honor culture at home. Start small and layer meaning into the details. For example, choose statement pieces that tell your story, like a handwoven textile at the foot of the bed or a framed travel photo anchoring a gallery wall.
Be intentional with where you source. Investing in Black-owned artists and makers ensures your home reflects both style and purpose. Don’t shy away from blending heritages either. Merging different cultural traditions creates a home that feels rich, layered and uniquely yours. And above all, make it unapologetically personal. Whether it’s repurposing an heirloom into functional art or styling global finds in a modern way, these curated touches create a home that’s not just beautiful, but soulful—a space that tells your love story every time you walk through the door.
At the end of the day, curating culture in your home is about building a legacy. Every textile, every photograph, every artifact becomes part of a larger story that honors where you come from while setting the stage for where you’re headed together.
When you intentionally design with culture at the center, you’re not just decorating rooms—you’re creating a sanctuary that celebrates identity, connection and love. For newlyweds, your first home isn’t just a place to live; it’s the foundation of your shared journey, layered with meaning and unapologetically yours.
